The hunting of grey seal will no longer require permits, said the Finnish Wildlife Agency.

The agency has instead set a regional quota for seal hunting. The quota allows for capture of up to 1,050 grey seals in a hunting year.

The quota has been introduced for three areas – the Gulf of Bothnnia-Merenkurkku region, southwest Finland, and the Gulf of Finland.

The catch from the hunting will have to be reported to the agency which is tasked with monitoring the quota.

The number of the seals, according to the agency, has nearly tripled since the 2000s. The new approach will, for instance, reduce harms related to professional fishing.

The agency says the quota is defined in such a way that the number of grey seals is not compromised.

Grey seal is the second forest species to be bound to quota hunting. Quota hunting has also been introduced in the reindeer management areas.
