Detective Chief Inspector Juha Laaksonen has been named the head of the newly formed serious crime unit of Helsinki police as part of an organisational reform that has started to take shape.

Laaksonen’s appointment will take effect from September.

Detective Inspector Jukka Paasio will take over the lead in organised crime investigations, assuming the duties of Jari Aarnio, former head of the Helsinki police drug unit.

Aarnio, who remains suspended, has been in custody since November 2013 on various charges including bribery, money-laundering and drug-trafficking.

The appointments were reported by the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

Further appointments and reforms in the Helsinki Police Department are expected during the summer and will be subject to review in mid-August, said Helsinki police chief Lasse Aapio.
