The Kuopio City Council on Monday unanimously approved the merger. Juankoski’s council had approved the merger last week.
The municipality of Tuusniemi was also part of the municipal merger plan but its council has decided to preserve its autonomy.
Kuopio and Juankoski will decide on the implementation of the merger separately in the next municipal elections.
The next municipal elections will be held in 2016.
Kuopio’s population will be around 111,000 after the merger.
