The Finnish Transport Agency has decided to decommission some of its historic lighthouses, agency sources said.

The agency is currently running an internal project to take a decision on the issue and will prepare a list of lighthouses that it would not be operating any more from early next year.

The lighthouses are likely to be donated or sold to the Forestry Board or private buyers.

“I do not think it unlikely that the National Board of Antiquities has ideas on how the lighthouses will be used or regulated,” observed Finnish Transport Agency Regional Manager Marko Reilimo.

Reilimo mentioned the Gulf of Bothnia and Ålands Sälskar lighthouses as examples that he said were useless now.

The Lighthouse Association said the move to sell the lighthouses could be a good decision. The association thinks the cultural and historical significant of the lighthouses would remain open as important destinations for visitors, even if they are sold to private operators.

“In Finland, the lighthouses have been preserved in their original states and they are national property,” Lighthouse Association President Angela Eriksson said, adding that at least the environments of the lighthouses should remain open to public.
