Koivisto was elected through a secret ballot on Monday evening.
The final round was a contest between Koivisto and the mayor of Mikkeli, Kimmo Mikander.
At the end, the result of the votes cast went Koivisto's way and saw him garner 47 votes to Mikander's 20.
In addition to Mikander, two applicants for the job, the mayor of Seinäjoki Jorma Rasinmäki and the mayor of Kerava also participated in the mayoral race.
The mayor's office received a total of 16 applications and three recommendations for the post.
The tenure runs for a fixed period of eight years.
Koivisto becomes the mayor of the seventh largest city in the country which has a population of 136,000. The current mayor of Jyväskylä, Markku Andersson, is going into retirement.
