A wild horse born in the Helsiki Korkeasaari zoo will be returned to the species’ native habitat in Mongolia, where it will be released to the wild.

The zoo said the destination of the wild horse is Khomyn Tal, a nature reserve in Mongolia.

The wild horse is expected to be transported over the weekend.

Wild horses in Khomyn Tal nature reserve live in the wild.

The two-year old Fimong was selected to be returned because of its age and also because its generic heritage is suitable. In addition, the habitat is calm.

The journey will pass through the Prague zoo where the wild horse will get to meet two wild horses and a stallion.

The herd will be transported to Mongolia in spring in a Czech military plane.

Currently, about 300 Mongolian wild horses live in the wild, but the species would have been extinct had it not been for the zoos. The wild horses have been transported back to the wild from zoos since 1988.
