Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja said inclusion of the Finnish Islamic Congregation by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in its list of terrorist organisations has probably been a mistake.

Speaking to the news agency STT, Tuomioja said it probably is a case of translation error in which the organisation was wrongly included in the list.

The minister said UAE did not certainly intend to name the Finnish Islamic Congregation, a group founded in the 1920s, on the list.

The members of the organisation comprise about 600 people who are entirely Finnish Tatars.

Tuomioja believes the entry of the organisation in the list will be corrected.

The minister, however, did not speculate which organisation the UAE intended to include in the list.

According to Tuomioja, the list is based on UAE’s own legislation and does not have much of international significance.

However, if one travels to UAE and has links to this organisation, it may lead to problems, said Tuomioja.

The UAE on Saturday published a long list of watched terrorist organisations. The list included organisations such as Al-Qaeda, Isis and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The report sparked confusion in Sweden and Norway following the inclusion of Sveriges muslimska förbund of Sweden and Det Islamske Forbundet i Norge of Norway in the list.

According to the Norwegian news agency NTB, the inclusion of Det Islamske Forbundet i Norge may have resulted from the UAE’s notion that Nordic organisations have links to the Muslim Brotherhood.
