The demonstration was organised by the Friends of Malmi Airport and the Finnish Aeronautical Association.
Around 500 people through the social media Facebook had informed earlier that they would take part in the rally. But, according to Timo Latikka, executive director at the Finnish Aeronautical Association, the turnout was more than that.

The organisers are against the plan by the City of Helsinki and the state to close Malmi Airport.
Latikka termed the plan absurd.
A petition to preserve the airport had garnered about 70,000 signatures by Tuesday.
