A proposal to extend the trial period in employment from four months to six months is soon to be deliberated on.

The Ministry of Employment and the Economy is set to present the proposal through tripartite negotiations with labour market organisations on Tuesday.

Labour Minister Ihalainen, however, did not comment on the matter on Sunday.

According to the minister’s staff, the proposal is aimed at lowering companies’ threshold to hire new employees.

Janne Metsämäki from the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions-SAK played down the proposal even before the start of the planned meeting.

“This is not a proposal which can be forwarded,” said Metsämäki, adding that they do not believe the idea will improve the employment situation.

The current trial period is long enough, said Metsämäki, pointing out that unions under the umbrella of SAK on the contrary are for a shorter trial period.
