The Municipal Council of Kittilä on Monday decided to dismiss the town’s mayor, Anna Mäkelä, due to lack of confidence.

The controversy began when the mayor expressed her concerns regarding a ski-lift tender in Levi to the police bypassing the municipal board.

The council decided to relieve Mäkelä from office with immediate effect.

The dismissal of Mäkelä was handled by a provisional committee which recommended the measure.

According to the committee, it is not possible for the mayor to be transferred to other capacities within the municipality.

The committee findings were followed by two counter-proposals – one by Councillor Mika Kuusela and the other by Inkeri Yritys, chair of the Kittilä Municipal Council.

Kuusela’s proposal said the mayor should be released from her duties immediately.

In the end Kuusela’s proposal won as 22 councillors voted in favour of mayor’s dismissal with four voting against, while four other councillors abstained.

Yritys’ motion, which proposed that the committee’s finding be dismissed, hardly received any support.

Kittilä’s municipal board is scheduled to deal with the mayor’s dismissal at a meeting next week. The municipal board will supervise the legality of the action of the municipal council and act upon it.

Mäkelä has been the mayor of Kittilä for about four years. Even prior to the council meeting, Mäkelä said she would appeal the decision to the Northern Finland Administrative Court, if the council decided to dismiss.

About a year ago, Mäkelä reported her concerns to the police regarding the actions of Levi Ski Resort managing director. Mäkelä wanted clarification whether Jouni Palosaari, executive director of the resort, preferred an Austrian manufacturer, when it came to the ski-lift tender.
