Finland will make its evaluations of foreign and security policy decisions primarily based on its own interests, said President Sauli Niinistö.

The president did not comment directly on the survey which found that just under half of Finns would currently take in stronger consideration of Russia.

The survey commissioned by the online daily Verkkouutiset affiliated with the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) revealed that 46 per cent of the respondents would take a more detailed account of Russia, whereas 44 per cent did not consider it necessary.

“Decision-making will take into account the whole of our working environment. The starting point is our own situation, our interests,” said Niinistö during a political luncheon hosted by Finnish political journalists association.

According to the president, only after the evaluation of the country’s interests, it will be examined how the decisions reflect on the country’s neighbours or other parties such as NATO and EU.

In reference to how the debate on the military alliance NATO is often assessed to mirror the Russian attitude, the president said he has not found Russia trying to influence Finland.

Instead, the Russian leadership has on various occasions been widely understood to be against NATO’s expansion and the missile defence system. These statements, according to Niinistö, are not directed only to Finland.
