The housing situation of young immigrant people is much weaker than that of the native ones, found a survey on youth housing.

Those in much worse situation are young people of immigrant background who do not have information related to housing application.

There are 1,600 homeless young people currently living in the country, according to the survey findings.

On an average, homelessness among the youth last for about three months. However, for young immigrants the period is longer and could last up to 1-2 years.

“Especially those from Africa and Middle East, the period of homelessness was longer,” said Seppo Laakso, managing director at Urban Research TA which conducted the research.

Compared to others, young immigrants had more difficulties in coping with housing costs.

Nearly half of the surveyed had bad or very bad experience dealing with housing costs, whereas in the native population the figure was one-fifth.

Others managed their housing costs better, if they were able to share the housing costs with someone else.

The Hopes and Reality-2014 Youth Housing survey was conducted through interviewing 1,500 youths between ages 18 and 29 over phone, with 200 of them speaking foreign languages.
