FTimes-STT Report, Mar 15

Three people were killed – one drowned and two burnt to death – in three separate incidents in the country on Saturday.

An elderly woman was found dead in an ice-swimming hole in Vähä-Tiilijärvi, Päijänne Tavastia in the municipality of Hollola.

The emergency centre was called when a person was noticed floating at around 8:30 a.m. The rescue department found an 85-year-old woman in the ice-swimming hole, still wearing a coat. According to the police, the woman had not been in the water very long. The police consider the death to be of normal causes.

The Vähä-Tillijärvi lake is located right next to downtown Hollola.

In another incident, a devastative fire broke out in Vuosaari in Helsinki on Saturday night killing one woman.

The rescue department got the call about a fire in Kaivonkatsojantie area just before 2 a.m. The fire was limited to one high-rise apartment, which was badly damaged, according to the fire chief on duty. There was no need for the other residents in the building to evacuate.

The cause of the fire was not yet clear as of Saturday.

In the third incident, a man died in a house fire in Teuva in South Ostrobothnia (Etelä-Pohjanmaa) early Saturday. According to the rescue department, the deceased is assumed to be an elderly man who lived in the home.

The emergency centre received a call about the fire that broke out in Ketomäentie after 8 a.m. The deceased was found during the fire fighting operations inside the home. The veteran-style house, built in the late 1950s, was destroyed by the fire and deemed uninhabitable.

The cause of the fire was not yet clear as of Saturday.
