Three men were rescued on Saturday at noon from a drilling rig being towed off the coast of Raahe in the Bay of Bothnia.

The rock buster drilling platform, which had been heading to Raahe, began to swing amidst two-metre-high waves, when the boss of the tow boat signalled the alarm for help.

There were three employees on the platform, the first of which was winched by helicopter and the rest were rescued by marine rescue boat.

“The legs of the rig were swinging so much that the helicopter had to pause during the rescue,” said Turku Maritime Rescue Centre’s Search and Rescue Director Tomi Maunu.

The platform’s legs are about 30 metres in height and were presenting themselves vertically.

All the three men were taken to the port of Raahe in good condition. The platform itself ended up being hauled to the harbour. Those in the tugboat were not in any danger, according to Maunu.
