Vihreä liitto (Green League) parliamentarians are the most active on the social media compared with other MPs, a survey commissioned by news agency STT found.

All the 15 Green MPs use social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter while most of them are active on photo sharing social networking service Instagram.

Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) lawmakers are the least active on the social media than their fellow legislators. Ten Finns Party MPs out of the total 38 do not use any social media platforms.

Parliamentarians of the Vasemmistoliito (Left Alliance), the Suomen Kristillisdemokraatit (Christian Democrats of Finland) and the Suomen ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland) are also active on the social media, the survey found.

All have their own politician profiles on Facebook and a majority of them have Twitter accounts as well.

Two Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) MPs are not on the social media while seven Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) MPs do not use the social media.

Left Alliance lawmaker Hanna Sarkkinen is the only MP who has signed up for video messaging application Snapchat, according to the news agency STT.

According to Pekka Isotalus, a professor of speech communications, the most active users of the social media are candidates who seek to get votes of the younger generation.

The popularity of image-based platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat is growing all the time.

“Visuality has become an important factor in politics. Finnish politicians are just getting to discover it,” said Isotalus. The use of the social media has thus become an integral part of the daily life of parliamentarians.

About three-fourths of the MPs use Facebook and Twitter for political communications while over a fourth use Instagram.
