The deputy chair of the ruling Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party), Annika Saarikko emphasised ‘that the idea of holding a referendum on the Finnish membership of the European Union is not an initiative of her party.

Saarikko was talking about the citizens’ initiative drawn up by Centre Party Member of European Parliament Paavo Väyrynen in an interview with the national broadcaster Yle.

According to Saarikko, the initiative was drawn up by Väyrynen and not the Centre Party, and neither does the party have a position on the issue.

Saarikko added that despite the party’s critical stance in the initial phase of Euro accession, the party has wanted to support the single currency during Finland’s membership in the EU.

The citizens’ initiative on Finland’s EU membership drawn up by Väyrynen has rapidly collected 26,000 signatures.

Parliament deals with the citizens’ initiatives which have accumulated at least 50,000 signatures.
