Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Wednesday said the Nordic countries should proceed much faster in digital collaboration than other European Union countries.

Ilves attended the Slush start-up event in Helsinki on Wednesday.

According to Ilves, the EU is moving too slow in the direction of internal digitalised market and some member states should be willing to make a false start. According to Ilves, the Netherlands, for example should also be in the fore front.

“A certain group of technologically advanced countries could make a difficult political decision that we are now taking a step forward. It could be possible and would require political will,” he observed.

According to the European Commission, an effective digital internal market could boost the union’s economy by hundreds of billions euros a year and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Ilves pointed out that the EU has more than 500 million people and that the market is divided into 28 countries. This makes it difficult for start-ups’ development. The United States has 320 million in a single digital market service.

“Our legislation has not kept pace with the digital change,” said Ilves.

The European Commission has also called for harmonisation of regulation and removal of unnecessary restrictions. Creation of a project referred to as digital union is one of the commission’s priorities. One of the most difficult questions concerns the intellectual property rights.

According to the organisers, Slush is a non-profit event organised by a community of entrepreneurs, investors, students and music festival organisers.
