The Kanta-Häme district court has fined a police officer for abusing his official power in investigating into the criminal background of his daughter’s boyfriend.

The boyfriend was suspected at the time of the investigation of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. He was later convicted in court for possession and trafficking of sexually offensive images of children.

In the Court of Appeals, the conviction became only aggravated sexual abuse of a child. The case is currently on appeal in the Supreme Court.

The district court sentenced the police officer to a percentage of his salary over 15 days for misuse of personal data and violation of official duty.

The police official was accused of making personal information requests because, among other things, his daughter had changed her behaviour and her circle of friends.

At that time the daughter was 18 years old and her boyfriend much older.

According to the district court, the police official did not have sufficient grounds to search for information on his daughter’s boyfriend from the police registry.

The decision can be appealed in the Appellate Court.
