Finance Minister Alexander Stubb on Saturday admitted to having relayed wrong information on statements by different authorities on nominee registration.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast) programme, Stubb who defended nominee registration during the parliamentary question time session on Thursday said 90 per cent of the statements were in favour of nominee registration.

However, in the light of the revelation, Stubb said the statements can be calculated in many ways.

According to the Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat, only under 10 per cent out of the 21 statements issued by the authorities support nominee registration.

“In the heat of debates, mistakes are made. The mistake was mine; sorry for that,” Stubb said.

The minister said the aim of the project was to ensure that capital remains in the country, since currently Finns can transfer their securities to a foreign custodial nominee, if they so wish.

The nominee registration is not part of Prime Minister Juha Sipilä’s government programme. The Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) are opposed to the introduction of nominee registration.

Other authorities such as the Financial Supervisory Authority, police, Prosecutor’s Office, Justice Ministry and the Tax Administration in their statements are understood to have opposed to allowing nominee registration.

Meanwhile, the prime minister on Saturday in a tweeter feed expressed full support to Stubb. We all make mistakes sometimes, Sipilä tweeted.

Antti Rinne, the leader of the main opposition Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland) suspects that the practice of selecting journalists by the Ministry of Finance has been made under the guidance of Stubb.

Rinne told the news agency STT that he suspects that Stubb had been aware of the way in which the ministry had been selecting journalists in relation to interviews on nominee registration.

Vihreä liitto (Green League) chair Ville Niinistö on Saturday said the position of Stubb is a stake, if he cannot prove that he did not lie to parliament deliberately.

Vasemmistoliitto (Left Alliance) leader Paavo Arhinmäki also demanded an explanation from the government on Stubb’s action. Afterwards, parliament should hold a vote of confidence on Stubb, Arhinmäki wrote on the social media site Facebook.
