More than a third of the councillors of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) could not refer to immigrants as Finns on the basis of citizenship alone, according to a survey commissioned by Lännen Media.

The majority (57%) of the respondents believe an immigrant only becomes a Finn when they are granted citizenship and live permanently in the country.

The Perussuomalaiset councillors differed with the rest of the councillors. A third of the Finns Party councillors would not consider even a third generation immigrant a Finn, even if the immigrant speaks at least Finnish or Swedish as a second mother tongue.

According to the survey, respondents over the age of 60 accepted immigrants as Finns slightly earlier than their younger counterparts.

Approximately 1,800 city and municipal councillors responded to the survey which was conducted in mid-October across the country.
