FTimes – STT Report, Jan 29

Finland’s armed forces intend to produce remote explosives to replace mines, reported the Finnish language newspaper consortium Lännen Media on Thursday.

The defence forces will develop the explosives in coordination with a domestic company.

The Ottawa Convention bans Finland from using landmines but allows for remotely-detonated explosives.

The Lännen Media report showed that it is possible to interpret the agreement in such a way that explosives can be triggered without a soldier seeing the enemy combatant with his or her own eyes.

Remote-controlled explosives could be deployed against enemies through the use of, for example, airplanes.

According to a Lännen Media interview with a source close to the matter, the new system will create a similar threat to mines and significantly increase the threshold for attacking Finland.

The development of the new weapon will proceed until the end of 2017 and, after the trial stage, production will begin in Finland.
