The customs have recovered a huge cache of smuggled drugs hidden beneath the floor of an empty lorry stopped in November in the Vaasa harbour.

Customs found 104 kilograms of amphetamine and three kilograms of cocaine.

“Of drug smuggling operations into Finland, this is the biggest bust of all time,” said Supervisory Director Hannu Sinkkonen.

He said not only the quantity of the drugs is the biggest but they are also very pure.

The amount of amphetamine recovered by customs would have produced more than 265kgs of the narcotic product or approximately 1.3 million doses.

Prior to this, the largest amount of amphetamine discovered being smuggled into Finland was about 50 kilograms.

The street value of the total amount of discovered drugs has been estimated at more than 9 million euros.

“This is based on the average price we see here,” Sinkkonen said, adding that the ingredients for making the drugs are cheaper in Helsinki than in northern Finland.

The truck came from southern Europe to Sweden and was ferried to Finland.

The case is being investigated as an aggravated narcotics offence. Two male suspects have been detained and, according to Sinkkonen, they come from former Yugoslavia.
