President Sauli Niinistö on Saturday said the Finland-Sweden defence cooperation is a completely different issue than that of Finland’s NATO membership.

The president’s comment made in an interview with the Finnish language tabloid Ilta-Sanomat followed submission of an assessment of the effects of Finland’s possible NATO membership to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.

In Niinistö’s view, Finland and Sweden do not have inseparable destinies.

According to him, Finland and Sweden will make their own decisions regarding NATO membership application, even if defence cooperation between the neighbouring countries is developed jointly.

“I hope the debate is vibrant and lively, and that the provision of this material leads to argumentative discussions,” Niinistö told the newspaper.

The assessment published on Friday is an autonomous report on the effects of Finland’s possible NATO membership compiled by an independent international group of assessors.
