Police vehicle torched in Pyhäjoki, dozens held
FTimes-STT Report, Apr 29

A number of environment activists locked in a clash with the police when they staged an anti-nuclear power plant demonstration at the site of Fennovoima power project in Pyhäjoki on Thursday, reported a Finnish language daily, Kaleva.

The protest turned violent in the afternoon as the activists started demonstrating near the construction site of the nuclear power plant.

The agitating people threw stones at the police and set fire to a police vehicle, while the law enforcers arrested dozens of protesters during the agitation.

According to Police Superintendent Veijo Alavaikko, the fire in the police vehicle was extinguished before it could spread.

“The cause of the fire is not known yet. Details are slowly emerging,” Alavaikko told the news agency STT.

According to Alavaikko, the police have detained a number of activists.

Earlier, the anti-nuclear power plant activists staged another demonstration at the same place on Tuesday when the police detained 37 of the demonstrators.

According to Alavaikko, the number of those detained on Thursday is roughly the same.

“The arrests are happening all the time, so the figures will be announced later,” said the police official.

Those detained are suspected of, among other things, assaulting an official.

There are dozens of protesters and dozens of police officers on the site.

Earlier in the day, a couple of dozen activists blocked two roads in the Hanhikivi peninsula by sitting or lying on the road. Some of them were attached to each other.
