Metsähallitus, the state enterprise which administers the state-owned lands and enterprises on Wednesday announced the suspension of logging at Leipimäki, Suomussalmi in the face of protests by environmental conservationists.

According to the Finnish Nature League, there were protesters at the site who pointed out that the logging probably violates the Nature Conservation Act.

Metsähallitus failed to stop logging despite repeated appeals following new observations of flying squirrels in the area, said the Finnish Nature League.

“We request for investigation into the logging being made,” said the Finnish Nature League in a statement.

The environmental protection body had without success asked the police to stop the logging.

The police were called to the site to safeguard industrial peace as the protesters arrived at the scene.
