Copper discharge from the copper-smelting company Boliden Harjavalta in Pori is reported to have leaked into the Kokemäki River.

The leak was confirmed by the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.

About 122 kilos of copper leaked into the river between July 30 and August 3, said the Southwest Finland ELY Centre.

Preliminary data however shows that the discharge remains within the plant’s allowed environmental limit. But, still, the short-term emission quantity is quite huge compared to the plant’s normal situation.

The leak happened after heavy rainfall. The water from the basement mixed with metal-rich water ended up in the drainage system. From the drainage system the leak was discharged to the Kokemäki less than 10 kilometres from the Pori city centre.

The leak is estimated to have ended in the sea and the emission depleted.

The risks of the emission will be evaluated through assessment of the water quality and sediment samples.

In July, 66 tons of nickel from Norilsk Nickel plant in Harjavalta leaked into the Kokemäki.
