Radicalisation of people has become a problem for Finland as well as the entire Europe, said Jyri Rantala, director of communication at the Finnish intelligence service, Supo.

Rantala, however, said compared to many other countries, the threat in Finland is low.

According to Supo, more than 40 people have left Finland for Syria. The number stood at five in November last year.

Rantala believes those who have left to take part in the Syrian fighting have already become radicalised and are well networked.

The threat is not only posed by radicalisation, states Rantala, concerns arise also about the returnees. They suffer from war trauma and are more radical and anti-west than before.

The threat is difficult to assess, points out Rantala, since the networks can be small and localised.

Supo, however, reassures that there is no concrete terrorist project right now in the country.
