Interior Minister Päivi Maria Räsänen reduced monitoring of the country's eastern border is necessary in the long term for cutting cost.

In an interview with Väli-Suomen Media, a Finnish language provincial newspaper, the Minister said savings are targeted in those areas in which least illegal activities are presumed to take place.

However, in certain areas, the level of monitoring will be maintained as in the current times.

According to Räsänen, the Border Guard is to develop procedures aimed at compensating employee reductions.

Räsänen said a compromise has to be reached since the Border Guard envisage to make 28 million euros in cuts in a saving programme which began last year and will continue until the beginning of 2017.

In addition, the Border Guard is expect to make 7.5 million euros until end of 2018 as part of the government saving programme.

The Border Guard believes the present level of patrols cannot be reduced from the current situation.
