President Sauli Niinistö on Friday met with the leaders of the country's political parties to discuss matters pertaining to the foreign and security policy of the country.

A similar meeting of the president with the party leaders was last held in August.

The invitations to the meeting were sent to the party leaders last week.

In an interview with the national broadcaster YLE, Niinistö said no one had submitted an application for membership of the military alliance NATO “under the current circumstances”.

According to the president, the leaders were satisfied with the country’s consistent commitment to the EU policy on sanctions.

Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) Chair Timo Soini, who also chairs the Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee, was pleased with the initiative for the gathering. Soini welcomed the president’s gesture, terming the initiative good and necessary under the prevailing situation.
