FTimes-STT Report, May 9

The Labour Court has ruled that the aviation staff's strike is lawful.

The ground handling support strikes threaten to shut down a large part of air traffic for a couple days.

The strikes were pushed ahead last week so that they would occur on the 19th and 20th of May unless the aviation union and representatives from the employer association, Palta, reach a resolution. Mediation in the case will continue on Monday.

Representatives from Palta said in a statement after the Labour Court's ruling that the blame lies in a defect in the labour dispute system.

"It is inconceivable that it is possible to augment your own labour dispute with the aid of another area of contracted workers, where the collective employment agreement is in effect and no disputes are in place," said Palta executive vice president Thomas Aarto in a press release.
