Fishermen started an hour-long race at noon on Saturday with the aim of catching as many different species of fish as they could. The 15th fishing marathon started in the waters around Helsinki and Kotka.

The size and weight of the fish caught are irrelevant in the race.

The organisers look forward to whether any fisherman nets any new species this year.

The number of new species found in the marathon has increased every year so far. The freshest catches in Helsinki are catfish and stone loach.

According to marathon organisers, the Fish Marathon is, in its diversity, Finland’s most demanding fishing competition, and a highlight of the year for discerning fisherman.

The Fish Marathon continues next week in Turku. In mid-June, the marathon travels farther inland to Joensuu.
