Major General Esa Pulkkinen has been appointed as the European Union's Director of Military Staff, said sources at the Ministry of Defence.

It is the EU's second highest military office.

Pulkkinen will start his three-year term in May, 2016. He is currently the director of the Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence.

In the past, Pulkkinen has served, among other positions, as the Brigadier General of the EU Military Staff.

The decision for Pulkkinen was made in the EU countries' armed forces meeting in Brussels.
