Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Friday dismissed Foreign Minister Timo Soini's view that Finland may not participate in the sharing of responsibilities to resettle asylum seekers in the European Union.

According to Sipilä, Finland will participate in some way in the reception of resettled refugees from Greece and Italy.

"I personally consider this a good compromise. Our own share in this is not zero," Sipilä said after a summit in Brussels.

EU leaders on Thursday evening outlined that member states will have to decide in July how 40,000 asylum seekers will be resettled.

The goal is to promote a voluntary basis, but all member states will take responsibility based on the capacity to carry the asylum seekers.

Hungary and Bulgaria were given an exception to refrain from additional responsibility because of migratory pressures faced by the two nations.

The United Kingdom and Denmark were also given a pass since their membership conditions allow them to be excluded from the responsibility.

Soini termed the decision a bad one. In his view, the decision does not fall within the EU jurisdiction.
