Prime Minster Juha Sipilä on Sunday said that the foreign policy leadership of the country was locked in discussion even after the decision was made to refuse the Russians on the EU travel ban list entry to the country.

Finland enquired from its EU partners the possibility of a waiver to allow the blacklisted Russians attend the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) meeting in Helsinki.

However, the EU did not extend an exemption which, according to Sipilä, left Finland with no other choice.

Sipilä stressed that the decision pertaining the entry of the Russians in the country was unanimously undertaken in a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy in the presence of the president of the republic.

Sipilä revealed that together with Foreign Affairs Minister Timo Soini and President Sauli Niinistö, they discussed the matter closely in the decision-making stage as well as afterwards.

The president is schedule to hold a media briefing at the Finlandia Hall, the venue of the ongoing OSCE Parliamentary Assembly meeting.
