Over a quarter of motorists caught driving in a state of intoxication were found to have used some sorts of drugs or narcotic substances.

The most common drugs found on motorists are amphetamines, tranquilizers and cannabis.

In Helsinki and Lapland, narcotic substances were in the blood of nearly every other intoxicated driver.

“Drugs are peddled more in Helsinki than the rest of the country, and Lapland falls on the trafficking routes. The substances make their way from, among other places, Sweden,” said Inspector Pasi Kemppainen from the National Police Board.

In all, nearly 40 different types of drugs were found in the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) statistics in relation to motorists driving under influence.

“The number of requests for clarification in respect to drugs and narcotics rose to 16 per cent from 2013 to 2014. The share of amphetamine is relatively rising,” said Kurt Kokko, departmental head at NBI.

According to the data, the police in 2014 apprehended about 17,500 motorists who were driving under influence, 4,500 of whom had narcotic substances in their blood.

The NBI buys the blood test results from the National Institute for Health and Welfare-THL.

According to Teemu Gunnar, head of Forensic Toxicology Unit at THL, different substances are found at the same time in the blood of intoxicated drivers.

“It is not uncommon to find amphetamines, tranquilizers, buprenorphine used in opiate substitution treatment, cannabis and still some form of a designer drug in the same person’s blood,” Gunnar said.
