The first reception centre accommodation made out of shipping containers was opened in Eurajoki on Friday.

The reception centre is expected to accommodate 150 asylum seekers during the weekend.

The containers originally were intended to be used by workers at the nuclear power plant construc-tion sites.

“There is possibility of future extension of the reception centre,” Hanna Kautto, the Head of Exter-nal Communications at the Finnish Immigration Service said.

The immigration service is all the time exploring means to introduce new accommodation solutions, and will examine whether the reception centre will continue its operations under the current facilities or in tents and containers.

Increased number of asylum seekers has been attributed for the introduction of the container ac-commodation.

“The number of (asylum) applicants has been high throughout the week. If this continues, we will need more than 2,000 new accommodation places in a week,” Kautto said.

Meanwhile, in Siikajärvi, Espoo, one row of containers ready to accommodate asylum seekers lay on the yard.

Eleven double rooms with a kitchen, two beds, a table, a separate toilet and washing facilities fits in the row of container accommodations.

The containers are also located on a lake beach which offers a comfortable place to spend time.

“Some want to transfer to these reception centres. For them it will be a step forward for a more in-dependent living,” MikaTolppola, director of the services of the private run reception centre said.

The containers were brought to Siikajärvi about a month ago but so far they had remained unoccu-pied.

According to the immigration service, the containers will be used once the issues of permits with the City of Espoo construction supervision are resolved.

The permits could be issued earliest after three weeks, according to Veronica Rehn-Kivi, the head of Espoo's construction supervision.
