The citizens’ initiative bill on withdrawal of Finland’s membership from the European Union is likely to reach to parliament as the criterion of achieving 50,000 signatures in support of the pro-posal may be fulfilled by this weekend.

The initiative had garnered more than 49,800 signatures in support of the withdrawal of the country from the EU membership by Friday evening.

The initiative was drawn up by a Finnish member of European Parliament Paavo Väyrynen who is critical of Finland’s membership in the union.

Väyrynen, also a leader of ruling Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) in the initiative proposes that if Finland withdraws from the Union and a referendum is held then a national currency would be in-troduced alongside the Euro.

The parliament has an obligation to handle matters of citizens’ initiative which have accumulated at least 50,000 signatures in six months after launch of the initiative.

The citizens’ initiative is examined and approved by the Population Register Centre before forward-ing it to the parliament.
