The police will set up POL IT, an information technology centre, in early April, local media reported.

The centre will be based in Rovaniemi, Tampere and Helsinki, and employ 90 people.

The POL IT headquarters will be in Rovaniemi, where about 70 of the 90-member staff will be working.

Furthermore, the centre’s staff will work on the police premises in Tampere and Helsinki.

The staff at POL IT will be transferred from the ICT Agency Haltik, the Police University College and the Helsinki Police Department.

The centre will be responsible for providing IT services related to police activities well as developing such services. POL IT will service the entire police administration.

“The aim is to support the core functions of the police by IT services produced within the organization,”  Jyrki Wasastjerna from the National Police Board told Finnish language daily Lapin Kansa.

The Ministry of the Interior in December said HALTIK-related services will be entrusted to the National Police Board, Emergency Response Centre and the Border Guard.

The remaining HALTIK services -- the public administration security network (TUVE) -- will be transferred to the Government ICT Centre Valtori this year.

About 320 officials will be transferred from HALTIK to Valtori. When all the transfers have been made, HALTIK will cease to be an independent agency.

In the future, POL IT and Valtori will provide all the IT services used by the police. The IT services related to police work will be provided by POL IT, while Valtori will be responsible for the basic information technology.
