The Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) district leaders do not see any immediate necessity to replace the party chairman, Antti Rinne.

In interviews with the Finnish news agency STT, 13 district leaders, however, did not dismiss the possibility of a race for the chair. STT interviewed 10 district leaders on Tuesday. Three of the interviewees were vice-chairmen.

In the opinions of many district leaders, the issue of a new chairman is not on the agenda. District leaders are hoping instead that discussions will focus on big matters of substance and the party line.

According to the party’s Häme district chairman, Jouni Mäkelä, the need for a chairman race should be evaluated only in October or November.

“I think the relevant question [now] is how the party will stand up to political changes in the autumn,” Mäkelä said.

According to the Ostrobothnia district chairman, Matias Mäkynen, the party line needs reform regarding social security and the relationship with the EU and the euro.

“There are some pretty big questions inside the party that should be resolved. The debate should include more matters,” said Mäkynen.

The Oulu district chairman, Tanja Tiainen expressed satisfaction at the programme work that has been done inside the party. Tiainen believe that the SDP’s drop of two percentage points in support is just a result of the chairman’s actions.
