The nationwide enhanced police traffic surveillance last week stopped 175 drunk drivers across Finland. According to the Police Board, the monitors have found almost 64,000 drivers under the influence of alcohol.

Of all the drivers tested last week, 175 are suspected of drunk driving or aggravated drunk driving. Among them, 26 are suspected of driving under the influence of something other than alcohol.

According to the Police Board, about one in three intoxicated driving cases involves some substance other than alcohol.

Studies have shown that drivers with blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.05 to 0.08 per cent risk lethal accidents 20 times more than sober drivers, mentioned the police.

The risk of lethal accidents increases to 30 times when BAC is between 0.08 and 0.12 per cent.
