European Union ministers responsible for fishing have decided to limit recreational as well as professional fishing of cod fish in the Baltic Sea.

From 2017, recreational fishing in the Baltic will be limited to five cod per day. In addition, a provision has further limited the maximum daily catch to three during an eight-week period in February and March.

The ministers at the same time sharply limited professional cod fishing. From 2017, Baltic Sea maximum quotas will fall 56 percent in the western part of the sea, and 25 percent in the east.

Swedish Minister of Agriculture Sven-Erik Bucht spoke of the changes to Swedish news agency TT. According to Butch, the negotiations on the limitations were held in Luxembourg for over 14 hours.

Baltic cod stock has declined alarmingly.
