The police department’s cost of interpretation services has seen a significant rise during the recent period, reported the Finnish language newspapers Väli-Suomen and Sunnuntaisuomalainen.

According to the National Police Board, translation and interpretation costs have increased due mostly to asylum investigations and deportations.

The police last year spent 3.6 million euros for language services. In 2006 and 2007, the figure was to the tune of 200,000 euros a year. But, this year, 2.6 million euros had already spent for the services as on end September this year.

The hike is partly explained by the rush of refugees which first hit Finland last autumn.

According to the Aliens Act, the police must use an interpreter, if a foreigner does not understand Finnish or Swedish.

The languages that are most commonly needed to be interpreted are Arabic, Romanian, Russian, and Estonian.

The freedom of movement within the European Union also has given a lift up to this need for interpretation.
