Finland and Mexico have pledged to boost up trade between the two countries.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and the visiting Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipilä at a meeting in Mexico City on Wednesday also expressed their interest to strengthen other bilateral relations, said an official press release on Thursday.

The leaders during the meeting said relations between the two countries are excellent, noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship that launched diplomatic relations between Finland and Mexico.

They discussed Finnish-Mexican relations and deepening of economic cooperation between the two countries. The leaders also discussed the situation in Latin America, Europe, and Syria.

Peña Nieto and Sipilä hoped that trade relations between Finland and Mexico would be intensified.

Sipilä said Finland is following with interest the major reforms in the telecommunications, energy and education sectors being implemented by the Mexican government.

“These reforms make Mexico, with its population of 122 million people, an increasingly interesting market for Finnish actors. Significant new business opportunities will become available to Finnish companies – opportunities worth grasping. Doors will be opened for Finnish companies during this visit,” Sipilä said.

The prime minister in his visit is accompanied by a Finnish business delegation made up especially of telecommunications companies. On Thursday, Sipilä addressed a telecommunications conference in Mexico City.

During his visit, the Finnish prime minister is scheduled to meet Mexican Secretary of Finance and Public Credit José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, Secretary of Communications and Transport Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, Secretary of National Defence Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, and Mexican business leaders.
