Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö does not believe that the transportation of the Iskander missile system to Kaliningrad is connected to the signing of a statement of intent with the United States on defence cooperation.

“The transportation of Iskander has been planned for a long time," Niinistö told the national broadcast Yle in its morning breakfast programme.

Two Su-27 fighter jets of the Russian Air Force crossed into Finnish territory off the shore of Porvoo on October 6 – one at around 16:45 p.m. and the second a little later at 21:30 p.m.

The missile system was transported to Kaliningrad on the same day.

According to the findings of the Finnish Border Guard’s investigations, the fighters flew through the Finnish airspace for about a minute.

During the interview with Yle, Niinistö said he had not been informed yet about the Russian ambassador’s clarification of the airspace violations.
