About 400 Somalis have applied for asylum in the country this year so far and the number is much lower compared to the previous year, sources at the Finnish Immigration Services said.

Last year about 2,000 Somali nationals applied for asylum in the country, said sources.

This year, a total 4,700 refugees from different countries lodged asylum applications.

“Last year was exceptional. Now we are in a more normal situation,” said director of asylum unit at the Finnish Immigration Service, Esko Repo.

Repo pointed out that the large number was affected by the huge influx of asylum seekers, which also led to the influx of Somalis.

The immigration service outlined in the spring that the security situation in Somalia has improved even though there are some regions where the situation has deteriorated.

On the basis of the improved situations, it is now difficult to grant asylum compared to the past.

Repo said that in spite of the individual cases, the security situation in Somalia since the spring has not been observed to have changed and thus the immigration service has not seen a reason to change its policy in relation to the matter.
