The Helsinki Diocesan Council on Friday urged the church to consecrate and bless all couple marriages when requested.

The policy therefore applies to gay couples.

Recently, the council took a negative stance on the consecration and blessing of same sex couples.

Neither the Diocesan Council nor the Bishop Council has the final say on the matter. The synod and other judicial bodies decide on matters related to changes in church statutes.

The synod has not yet taken a clear position on the consecration of gay couples.

A number of Helsinki bishop councils have informed that they consecrate gay couple marriages.

Helsinki bishop Irja Askola also supports the matter.

The Diocese of Helsinki is responsible for the possible disciplinary action which may befall a Helsinki bishop who consecrates gay couple marriage.
