President Sauli Niinistö on Saturday said he has no clue to how the international community is going to solve the Syrian crisis.

He made the observation while making a brief review of the Syrian situation at the reservists’ conference (CISOR) in Santahamina.

“Certainly, no one expects a big positive solution right away, but even a step backwards would be really unfortunate. Hopefully, now a step forward will be taken,” Niinistö said.

The president considers maintaining the channels of discussion a sign of hope.

He said a full-scale military action targeting civilians is going on in Syria.

He also dubbed the international community as powerless in regard to the Syrian conflict.

Niinistö said the volatile international situation has been reflected for a long time in the Baltic Sea situation, and the tension has rather escalated significantly.

The president, however, did not relate the Western criticism of Russia’s action in Syria to the suspected airspace violations by Russian fighters recently over the Baltic Sea.

The possibility of a new ceasefire in Syria was deliberated on Saturday in Switzerland.
