Economic Affairs Minister Olli Rehn has decided on Friday to quit the cabinet of the three-party alliance government after parliamentary Supervisory Council appointed him to the board of the Bank of Finland.

Rehn together with the Director General of the Financial Supervisory Authority Marja Nykänen commence their five-year term from the beginning of February 2017.

Meanwhile, the ruling Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) is set to appoint a new minister in place Olli Rehn.

Prime Minister Juha Sipilä who is on a tour of South America has not revealed his preferred can-didate to replace Rehn.

Sipilä, however, announced that Keskusta party council and parliamentary group will select a new minister on 27 October.

Sipilä wrote on his blog that he had agreed together with Rehn that before his departure he should complete the government’s energy and climate strategy.
