Information regarding former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari was changed on the Nobel Prize website due to media attention, Nobel Committee website director Mattias Fyrenius told the news agency STT.

“It was an easy decision. Once we understood the combination of different facts, it was clear to us that we had to change the information. From a Finnish and global perspective, it is clear that the great statesman Martti Ahtisaari was Finnish,” said Fyrenius.

To Fyrenius’s knowledge, there has not been a similar slight in the past. Only Tuesday, the Nobel Committee announced that there would be no exceptions for individual Nobel Prize winners.

According to Fyrenius, Nobel Media, which manages the web pages, was contacted on Wednesday by the Finnish Embassy in Stockholm.

The birthplace of Nobel Prize winners is listed.

For Finns, however, the matter is a bit more complicated, as there are three possible locations: Finland, Finland (now Russia), and Russia (now Finland).

Ahtisaari was listed as being born in Finland (now Russia), as he was born in Vyborg. However, due to the media storm, Ahtisaari’s birthplace was changed to simply Finland.
