Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen on Saturday said it is most natural that the newly-elected Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party) Chairman Antti Rinne would perform as the finance minister.

Katainen, who has been leading the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party), the biggest component of the alliance government for one decade, said according to his personal experience it would be impossible to be a party leader without a key ministerial responsibility.

The prime minister’s remarks came at the Kokoomus council in Vantaa. He said the heaviest jobs in the government are those of the prime minister and the minister of finance.

Katainen said he had no intention to interfere in the SDP by giving advice about selecting Rinne’s portfolio but only spoke based on his own experience.

He also said there would be no major changes in the “mini” government negotiations on spending limits. What parties have already agreed will be adhered to, he said.
